Gracie Jiu Jitsu (or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is the fastest growing Martial Art in the world today. Recently, with the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts Tournaments such as the EFC and UFC, Jiu Jitsu has hit the public eye.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town, the biggest Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in South Africa, would like to use this new found popularity and interest to raise money for Cancer Research.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town will be open from 10am Saturday 8th September to 10am Sunday 9th September 2012. During this time students of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town and grappling clubs across Cape Town will be able to get sponsored to come and grapple (roll) for as long as they can during this 24 hour period. All proceeds will go to Cancer Research and help fund treatment for Juan Poerstamper, a Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town student, who has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and is currently undergoing treatment.
During this Roll-a-thon James Smart, Head Instructor of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town, will attempt to roll for the whole 24 hours – setting a world record (to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records).
There will be raffle tickets sold for prizes and an auction on the Sunday morning for items including a private lesson with the oldest grandson of the creator of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Ryron Gracie who is visting Cape Town in November. There will also be official 2012 Roll-a-thon T-shirts and hoodies on sale at the Academy to commemorate the event (t-shirt and hoodie orders need to be in by 5 August 2012).
Before the Roll-a-thon, we will be contacting all major media sources in Cape Town to publicise the event. This will include local newspapers such as Table Talk the Tygerburger Group and Cape Times, radio stations such as Zone Radio, television programs like Expresso TV Show and the ETV channel. To achieve this we have recruited the help of a major PR company in Cape Town.
Leading up to and during the event, Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town will be tweeting live from the event. We will also encourage anyone who is part of the event to tweet about their experiences. To follow the event twitter users can search for the official Twitter hash tag: #24HourRollathon.
The whole event will be filmed by a professional cameraman who will create a clip we can post on YouTube which this will be sent to the Gracie Academy HQ in Los Angeles, California, to put in their newsletter (the last video they posted of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town by Gracie Academy HQ recieved over 6000 views). This clip will also be used for TV segments such as Power Combat Zone on Super Sport.
Sponsors of the event will have their logo displayed on print media and will be thanked for their support. All company sponsorships will go directly to CanSA, The Cancer Association of South Africa to aid in their amazing work in the fight against Cancer.
We will have a banner displayed in the Academy during the event with the sponsor logo’s on it. In all TV and Radio activity we will display and or mention the sponsor when and where possible.
Money raised during the course of this event will be split in the following ways:
1) All company sponserships will go directly to CanSA, The Cancer Association of South Africa to aid in their amazing work in the fight against Cancer.
2) All private sponserships will go directly to Juan Poerstamper in order to assist him with his medical costs for his treatment.
