Beyond the blue belt.
In addition to the 36 basic techniques, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of hundreds of advanced techniques. We have organised these into a clearly defined, systematic curriculum called the Master Cycle. In order to streamline the learning process, we have divided all the techniques in the Master Cycle into seven Positional Chapters: Mount, Side Mount, Guard, Half Guard, Back Mount, Leg Locks and Standing. These Positional Chapters are further divided into specialised subsections, for more detailed learning.
Whereas the Gracie Combatives course aims to give you a broad understanding of the essential principles and techniques, the Master Cycle’s objective is to take you from basic understanding to positional mastery. This is done by dedicating 8-16 weeks to each chapter, before moving on to the next. By spending such a prolonged period of time on the specialised study of one position, students learn several closely related techniques and gain a greater understanding of the techniques, which drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to master the art.
The secret to success as a Master Cycle student is disciplined attendance. The more you attend class during each chapter, the more you will benefit. Once we have cycled through all 7 chapters, we will repeat the cycle. Each time you repeat the 7 chapters, you have the chance to learn new techniques as well as strengthen and expand your foundation of existing skills. This process continues for several years until the student becomes a master in every position of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
